5:55 am - Today.....
|
....after I've finished the volunteer work at school, we're off to Bundy to get new tyres, and CHANGE THE TOILET SEAT I bought a week or so ago. When I rang and told the shop it had broken and I was returning it they said, "We don't return toilet seats - it's a health and safety issue." I said "It's broken!! Didn't even get to use it." He said, "Are you still using it?" I said much louder this time, "It's broken!! I had to put the old one back on." He said, "Oh well then seeing as you are not using it I'll let you return it."
I will try to keep my temper. I will try not to yell at the messenger.
Why a health and safety issue? They can't sell it - they sure as hell are not going to use it - they don't even have to handle it - it's still in the box.

9:37 am - how to beat the heat....
|

I bought a bag of lime to spread around the yard to deter fleas and put in the chook yard and shed to stop lice etc. I had to buy a huge bag. I have it stored in two large commercial paint tins.
In a moment of inspiration, I painted the chook shed with a mix of lime and water to see if it would help with the heat in the shed. It's real cheap and easy to paint on. It worked a treat so I painted Lefty's little aviary too.
Looks terrible but it cuts the heat down heaps. I was amazed it actually works.

9:02 am - healthy stuff...

http://www.bowen.asn.au/bowen-therapy/what-is-bowen-therapy/
I don't usually post about aches and pains, but I'm just so thrilled with the results from this^ treatment. I've been in pain for years, and having to use a walking stick to move at all a lot of the time. Doctors were bloody useless - and the physio didn't help much either. A friend suggested this treatment and I'm walking almost pain-free. Couldn't believe the change!!
I was willing to give anything reasonable a *go*. Glad I did. She straightened the whole frame starting at the top, which put my pelvis, hips, and knees back into the right order.Bloody marvellous. Not pain-free entirely of course - the arthritis is still alive and making itself known. I'm just so glad to be walking again.

8:18 am - good advice?
|
This is what we were always told. "Go stand in a doorway." It's always been the standard mantra of what to do if you're caught up in an earthquake - but the old saying is actually misleading. Forget about door-frames - they offer little protection, and in fact, you might get whacked by a swinging door. The Ministry of Civil Defence offers advice on how to maximise your chances of surviving uninjured. For example: "In modern homes, doorways are no stronger than any other part of the structure ... If you are in bed, stay there, hold on and protect your head with a pillow. "If outdoors, lie on a clear spot on the ground away from trees and poles."
So - why don't they build them stronger then? Grrrrrr.

7:53 am - ...a brief respite....
|
We've had really hot temps for ages - up in the top 30's c and finally have a break at the right time! We've had to go away from home for a whole day - twice this week, and when we do that i have to leave my chooks shut up in their shed for the whole day. The neighbours have 4 dogs, and Smoky likes to invite them over to play. They could demolish my chooks no probs if they had a mind to.
At least when it's cooler I know they're not going to be broiled when I get home. AND I get more done. I didn't think the heat affected me, but it's been so oppressive I've done little in the way of housework for a couple of weeks.

9:54 am - ..a rose by any other name......
|
Whoa!t has been three weeks since my last confession..
I'll consider it a compliment to be called an old chook. Meet Sarah.

4 weeks ago Sarah was attacked by Smoky when we were at the markets. She had all the skin and feathers ripped off her back with her innards all showing. I put her in *hospital* ( which has also served as death row and nursery), and tucked her in a box facing the back of the shed so she wasn't stressed by *things*, and fed her by hand for several days, until we decided whether it would be kinder to put her out of her misery.
After 3 days, she ventured out of her box, and was feeding herself. Walking very gingerly and not at all happy, but alive and apparently reasonably well. After a week, she started attacking me if I lifted her, and laid eggs. I was amazed - I really thought she was going to die.
I still had her separated from the others after 2 weeks, as she had a gaping wound on her back, the dead skin surrounding the area was sloughing off, and the other chooks would have killed her (that's what they do with sick chooks).
I let her out on her own and she would haunt the area outside the run, wanting to be with the others. After 3 weeks, she wanted to be with the others, so I let her out with them, and the rooster was so pleased to see her, he promptly attended to her twice. She didn't seem to worry, and he didn't hurt her, so I let her go back with the others.
Now, the old injured parts have sloughed off, feathers and all, and her skin has closed up, is a nice healthy pink, and the feathers will grow back.
What a tough old bird!

7:12 pm - I wish I could cartoon like Mia......
|
This is the story.
Anne noticed Jess (a very lively Border Collie) barking at something in the grass by the gate. Last week she'd displayed the same behaviour when she found a snake wriggling around under the leaves. Next, Merlin (an old Irish Wolfhound) went to help. So Anne thought she had better investigate. She went down and found not a snake, but a baby double bar (very small bird like a cottonball with beak and feet) fluttering around on the other side of the fence, looking not very well. So, she called her hubby to hold the dogs, and went out the gate to save the bird , and put it safe in a cage to recover - or not. While she was bending down to scoop it up, it fluttered through the fence, and Merlin ate it!
I laughed and laughed, and said, "Well it was a quick and painless death."
Our Smoky saw her first snake a couple of weeks ago. We'd been a bit worried cos we don't know what Blue Heelers do. Some dogs attack and kill snakes, other spoke their noses in where they're not wanted and get bitten. Smoky just growled and barked and stayed well out of the way, and I knew it must have been a snake under the car because she went around the black pump cords sniffing and leaping back. We saw it the next day under the sofa outside under the verandah. It was a black snake and we just ignored it, Smoky wouldn't sleep on her sofa, and it went away after a storm. Good side effect is the mice have gone too. He either ate them all, or they moved away when the snake came.

10:01 am - another birthday.....
|
No. Not mine. My sister's. We went to the Bundaberg RSL for a meal. It was absolutely delicious (which is why I chose to go there in the first place). I had Salmon salad...with pumpkin bread...and a green salad sides. Wonderful. It was her 73rd birthday......maybe that's why I look happier than her?

We were amused at the local multi-cultural day to see these two stiltwalkers return to their rooms, and collect their door key from the spouting above their door.

He went to Coulston Lakes to his own little harem - and a fox got'em all. Nothing but blood and feathers. Never mind, he had a nice life - and we didn't have to chop his head off.

10:39 am - hmph. Roo dog more like......
|
Smoky is a cattle dog. (supposedly) It is bred into her kind to round up cattle. She's seen cattle. She ran away as fast as she could. Yesterday(and today), there was a mob of kangaroos down by the Hall. She took off to the end of her lead ready to chase 'them'. They hopped away into the scrub, and she wanted to follow. I don't fancy her chances trying to round them up. They leap over buildings in a single bound. (well, fences anyway)

10:33 am - *instinct*
|
What is this thing we call instinct? Dusky, my big grey chook, was happily pecking around the yard, crossing over the black drainage hose quite unconcernedly, then she gave her *alarm* cluck, and leapt back. A part of the hose I'd dragged over the decomposed granite driveway, was covered in orange-brown clay. Now, she has never seen a brown snake, but her *instinct* kicked in, and she was extremely wary. I reckon it's passed down with the DNA, and all these past-life regression struff that gets bandied around, is 'memories' implanted by our ancestors.

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.
Very true...

6:51 pm - Sunday Roast !!
|
Rocky tasted yummy. The 'straight-from-the-garden' fresh green stuffing helped. I cooked him for 5 hrs verrry slowly. He was nice and tender, a bit gamier than your usual store-bought chook.
...and todays new word...Zeugma.

3:46 pm - brrrrr....

Yes, we do get frosts. We had our first one this morning and the poor little magpies were wondering why they couldn't get a drink. I had to take a kettle of hot water down to make a hole in the ice. The bird bath was frozen solid.
